CATF director named YWCA 'Woman of Achievement'

proved life in the community, and opened doors for other women

through their professional and civic accomplishments.

As the first executive director of CATF, Smith has led the movement to provide comfort, compassion and care for thousands of men, women, and children living with HIV and AIDS. Since 1987, the task force has grown from an agency of 60 volunteers and a budget of $55,000 tomore than 500 volunteers and a budget of more than $2 million.

CATF has been recognized by the U.S. Public Health Service as one of the nation's most outstanding AIDS service agencies. In 1996, Smith received the coveted $25,000 Stonewall Award for her role in building a nationally recognized AIDS service organi-

zation. As a board member of AIDS Action Council in Washington, D.C., she has worked for national policies and legislation that affect people with AIDS.

In addition to her professional role, Smith in 1995 acted as primary caregiver for a friend who was dying of AIDS-related illnesses. The experience of professionalturned-caregiver gave her new insights into the educational challenges and advocacy issues related to AIDS.

"Celebrate" is the theme of the 14th annual YWCA Women of Achievement Awards luncheon, which will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Exhibit Hall D of the Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 North High Street.

Smith, along with the other seven honorees, were nominated by the community atlarge and selected by a panel of independent community leaders. They will be inducted into the Academy of Women of Achievement at the luncheon.
